Spires of Stone

Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Spires of Stone by Annette Lyon. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Bethany Hansen can't stand the sight of Benjamin Adams. His very presence completely irritates her, and vice-versa. So, when Hannah takes an interest in Ben's brother, Claude, Bethany sees much more of Ben than she wants to. But Philip, the third brother, also has an interest in Hannah. Things get complicated in this historical romance - set amidst the building of the Salt Lake Temple.

This was my very favorite book by Annette Lyon - and I think that I've read everything that she has written! I couldn't put it down. I thought the relationships between brothers and sisters were realistic and compelling. The social interactions between characters were interesting and fun. It was wonderfully addictive and I couldn't wait to see how it ended. There was one loose end that I would have liked to see wrapped up - but I guess it didn't really matter to the story. This is a great example of a light hearted romantic story, well worth the price.

Out of Jerusalem Vol. 4: Land of Inheritance

Reviewed by Dayna Davis, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Out of Jerusalem Vol. 4: Land of Inheritance by H.B. Moore. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

In this final installment of the “Out of Jerusalem” series, Lehi’s family has been living in the Promised Land. There is an uneasy truce between brothers as families are settling in and establishing their homes. Then Lehi dies. The last tie holding the family together is gone. The family must make decisions and choose sides.

H.B. Moore brings the Book of Mormon to life through her meticulous research and creative talents. Moore helps us to read “between the lines” of Nephi’s account and gives us a stronger connection to early prophets through this compelling book.

What I truly love about this particular novel is the portrayal of good versus evil. I thought it was illustrated well throughout that a side must be chosen. Good or evil. God or not. Then once the side is chosen, there is no middle ground anymore.

This series continues to make me relate to and care about Nephi’s family - as I would friends. H.B. Moore has a gift for drawing you into the middle of the story and making it real. This last book in the “Out of Jerusalem” series is a intriguing read – one you won’t be able to put down. I'm really going to miss this family as presented through these books.

Sheep's Clothing

Sheep's Clothing by Josi S. Kilpack. Published by Deseret Book.

Jess is a fifteen year old girl that feels like no one understands her, especially her mother. She is looking for a friend. Someone that can relate. She finds that with her online friends Emily and Colt and slowly she withdraws from her normal life. Then she disappears, with no note or explanation. Her family is frantic to find her and their best leads are from the computer.....

This book was actually really scary. Not in the usual mystery, suspense sense, but in the 'this could happen to you' sense. The author is brilliant in how she warns other families of impending danger. This family did everything right, used every protection they were supposed to, and still the danger got in to their home. As a Young Women's leader - I would really like to have every one of my girls read this book. The only thing that makes me a little cautious is a few short candid comments in the book about intimacy between spouses. While it's a very tame in comparison to what's on television, I still think parents should be able to approve this content. However, my overall thought is that this book is a must read for every teenager I know. It is truly enlightening.

Grave Secrets

Grave Secrets by Marlene Austin. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Bethany Carlisle graduates from college on the day she learns her grandmother, the woman who raised her, is dead. Not only is she dead, but she left Bethany with many stipulations listed in her will, in order to inherit the estate; she must move to an abandoned house in Maine and spend a year there writing a book. Then strange things start to happen and Bethany doesn't know what to think or who to trust.

This is an interesting novel. It's a book full of mystery and suspense with an emphasis on family history. A strange combination. But I found it quite compelling. There are parts that are a little difficult to follow, I got a little lost. But the ending was very satisfactory and not at all predictable. Please refrain from reading the end of the book first, as it will be very confusing and not make much sense. Believe me, I speak from experience. It was an enjoyable, quick read and a fun mystery.

Barrington Family Saga Vol. 2: A Quiet Promise

Barrington Family Saga Vol. 2: A Quiet Promise by Anita Stansfield. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

James and Eleanore Barrington are happily settled in Iowa with their family as Volume 2 of the "Barrington Family Saga" continues. Eleanore has finally found the church of her mysterious book that she found long ago in England. James still has much to learn about himself and his family, and the path to self-discovery isn't always easy. Tragedy strikes before James learns his biggest lesson.

I am sure that all I have to say is, this is an Anita Stansfield book, and all fans will know exactly what this book is like. It is a romance, a story of the love of a family, and a story of testimony and faith. I do recommend that you read Volume 1 before Volume 2, because the story will not make sense if you don't. It is a quick book, one that will be difficult to put down until it's over. But the story doesn't end here - there will be another one to come in the "Barrington Family Saga". It will be interesting to see what happens next. All fans of Anita Stansfield's books will enjoy this one.
