Look What Love Has Done

Reviewed by Melanie Lott, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Look What Love Has Done by Joseph Walker. Published by Deseret Book.

If you are the type like me who really only has time available to read for 5 or 10 minutes at a time, this book is just what you need. Joseph Walker includes 50 or so uplifting stories to lift your heart and give you something to ponder on as you go through your day. They are short, but they have so much heart and meaning to them.

I sat and read a chapter or two every day at breakfast and lunch time and truly enjoyed my time with this book each day. It really helped me look at things in a different perspective and to be grateful for all the blessings I have in my life.

The Wednesday Letters

The Wednesday Letters by Jason Wright. Published by Shadow Mountain.

Jack and Laurel have been married for 39 years. Each Wednesday of their marriage, Jack wrote Laurel a letter. One evening, Laurel unexpectedly has a heart attack. In terrible health himself, Jack cannot summon the help he needs, and after she is gone, he writes his last Wednesday letter to her before passing away himself.

Their adult children arrive for the funeral to discover the Wednesday letters. They embark on a reading spree to uncover a deep family secret.

I don't often read fiction, but I enjoyed this book. Jason Wright does the right thing as an author by offering questions early in the book that make you intrigued to find out the answers. I felt like I had to keep reading until I found out the answers to two questions. What was the secret to be found in the Wednesday letters? And what did Jack say to Laurel in his final Wednesday letter to her? If these questions are intriguing to you too, pick up this book.

Cliff Hanger

Cliff Hanger by Pamela Carrington Reid. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

'Cliff Hanger' is a compelling story about the Coffin House Kids vacation to the Great Barrier Reef - to help out their injured Uncle Ammon. But strange things have been going on at Uncle Ammon's fishing ground. A dead body was found tied to a buoy, and though it wasn't on their property, it was close enough to worry about. When the kids keep seeing the strange man that they met on the ferry, they get more than a little suspicious. Soon, the Coffin House kids have thoughts about poachers and even entertain thoughts that Uncle Ammon is up to no good. The kids just can't pass up this opportunity to solve a mystery!!

I loved 'Cliff Hanger', couldn't put it down! It was thrilling and suspensful. It didn't turn out the way you planned. That was a big one for me because I really have a problem with books that have obvious endings. 'Cliff Hanger' goes to show, that there are more possibilities than just the predictable good and bad endings. The author, Pamela Carrington Reid did a wonderful job. When it comes the the setting, I was really there at the Great Barrier Reef interacting with the characters! This book is about adventure and faith. 'Cliff Hanger' is a good book to read to the family or to curl up with on a rainy day. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a fast read, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I hope there will be more adventures to share with the Coffin House Kids!

Ravenspell: The Wizard of Ooze

Ravenspell: The Wizard of Ooze by David Farland. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

Being a mouse is hard. You have to constantly hide and worry. You are always having to be on the look out for humans, poison, and traps and you must be forever attentive to predators who would like to make a mid-day snack out of you. Magical mouse Amber, with Ben, her magic buddy (who used to be a boy), Bushmaster, a wise vole, and Thorn, a very smart mouse, set out to change all that. They decide to take over the world to make it a safe place for mice. Too bad Sebaceous Ooze has the same idea. He is an evil worm that uses magical song to enslave mousekind. He also wants to use his army of slobber goblins to take over and ruin the world.

I really enjoyed this book. I have not read the first in the Ravenspell series. With the "Wizard of Ooze", I didn't have to. It was good on it's own. This story is about magic, adventure, and friendship. The suspenseful sequences were wonderful. I highly recommend this book for all ages.

Widow's Revenge

Widow's Revenge by K.L. Fogg. Published by Covenant Communications, Inc.

To Wesley, getting kicked out of school is the least of his worries. Soon, the reason why he's out of school is moving in next door, school bully Dylan Maclean. Wesly also finds out Harrison is more than just a geeky tutor. When things take a turn for the worse, events leave Wesly in the middle of nowhere, with a madwoman (who thinks she's his mother) and with wild animals right outside his door. Wesly has to rely on some unlikely people to escape.

I think Widow's Revenge is a great sequel. This book is the sequel to "Serpent Tide". On it's own, you do miss a lot of background information. The first time I read it - it was hard to understand, what the characters were talking about or who different people were. When I re-read it though, it was easier to understand and I liked it much better.

I have always loved adventure books and this one certainly didn't let me down. It was exciting and thrilling but allowed you time to think about the next part in the story. I was in suspense until the very end! I recommend this book to both boys and girls around 12-16 years old.
